Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Affective Disorder(SAD) is a form of depression that begins in early winter and generally lasts from 5 to 7 months until spring. Various therapies include Bright light or Full Spectrum Light Therapy, Prescription Medication and a Change in Diet. We include these recipes as a form of therapy to increase Serotonin Precursors, Tryptophan, B Vitamins and Vitamin D. Other Common sense type of treatments include a daily vitamin containing magnesium, B-complex, vitamin D and minerals; get as much natural sunshine as possible;exercise; minimize coffee and take a winter vacation in a warm climate.

Foods to help fight depression are:

Omega 3 fatty oils
Brown rice - contains vitamins B1 and B3 and Folic Acid
Brewers Yeast - contains vitamins B1, B2 and B3. smoothies
Whole grain oats - contain folic acid, pantothenic acid and vitamins B6 and B1
Cabbage - contains vitamin C and folic acid
Also, raw cacao, dark molasses and brazil nuts (high in selenium)
Chickpeas are rich in iron, vitamin E and fiber.
Dark green vegetables such as spinach and peas are high in folate.
